Each sculpture consists of a colossal hand-painted reproduction of one of the seven Sunflower Paintings, measuring an impressive 7 x 10 metres, which rests on a 25 metre,17,000 kilogram steel easel. The first Easel was erected in Altona, Canada on October 17, 1998. The second was finished and erected on November 8, 1999 in Emerald, Australia. The third easel was successfully proposed to the city of Goodland and the State of Kansas, USA. Construction began in the spring of 2000. Discussions are currently underway in South Africa, and Japan for future sites.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dailyart.blogspot.com/2005/08/big-easel-van-gogh-project.html' title='The Big Easel - A sequence of galleries exhibiting luggage and handbags proceeded to a large advertising photograph of the actress Uma Thurman and smaller shots of runway models, all wearing Vuitton fashions. What drew me to the show, however, were two bags in the variation of the Vuitton pattern that the Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami developed with the company in 2003. The brightly colored Murakami line has been phenomenally successful, with sales reported to be in the vicinity of $300 million. Murakami's handbags were presented along with two small paneled screens painted in the same patterns that appear on the bags ...

The 100 favourite fictional characters

The Independent Online Edition >The 100 favourite fictional characters

The 100 favourite fictional characters... as chosen by 100 literary luminaries to celebrate World Book Day, we asked the leading lights of British letters to name the characters who give them the greatest reading pleasure. A new take on DIY (do-it-yourself)!

Yahoo! News - Prankster Smuggles Art Into Top Museums

Prankster Smuggles Art Into Top Museums

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Many a visitor to New York's Museum of Modern Art has probably thought, "I could do that."

A British graffiti artist who goes by the name "Banksy" went one step further, by smuggling in his own picture of a soup can and hanging it on a wall, where it stayed for more than three days earlier this month before anybody noticed.

The prank was part of a coordinated plan to infiltrate four of New York's top museums on a single day.

The largest piece, which he smuggled into the Brooklyn Museum, was a 2 foot by 1.5 foot (61cm by 46 cm) oil painting of a colonial-era admiral, to which the artist had added a can of spray paint in his hand and anti-war graffiti in the background.

The other two targets were the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History, where he hung a glass-encased beetle with fighter jet wings and missiles attached to its body -- another comment on war, Banksy told Reuters on Thursday.

"It was just an outsider's view of the modern American bug, bristling with listening devices and military hardware," he said.

An art Web site called www.woostercollective.com has posted pictures of the artist -- wearing an Inspector Clouseau-style overcoat, a hat and a fake beard and nose -- hanging up his work at the four museums and describing how he did it.

Speaking by telephone from an undisclosed location in Britain, Banksy said he conducted all four operations on March 13, helped by accomplices who filmed him and provided distractions where necessary.

"They staged a gay tiff (lovers' quarrel), shouting very loudly and obnoxiously," said the artist, declining to give his real name or any personal details beyond his occupation as a professional painter and decorator.

It is not the first time he has staged such stunts. Last year he smuggled work into the Louvre in Paris and London's Tate, attracting attention in the British media.

"My sister inspired me to do it. She was throwing away loads of my pictures one day and I asked her why. She said 'It's not like they're going to be hanging in the Louvre.'"

He took that as a challenge. "I thought why wait until I'm dead," he said.

His preferred creative outlet, graffiti on trains, was growing more difficult due to greater security so he decided to branch out into infiltrating museums. "I tend to gravitate to places with less sophisticated security systems," he said.

Officials at the Natural History Museum declined to comment on security. Museum of Modern Art officials said only that the offending picture was taken down on March 17.

It was unclear what gave the game away but Banksy's version of Andy Warhol's iconic images of Campbell's Soup Cans showed a can of Tesco value tomato soup, a discounted brand sold by a British supermarket chain.

"Obviously they've got their eye a lot more on things leaving than things going in which works in my favor," Banksy said. "I imagine they'll be doing stricter bag checks now."

He said the painting in the Metropolitan Museum, a small portrait of a woman wearing a gas mask, had been discovered after one day, while the others stayed up for several days. The paintings were fixed to the wall with extra-strong glue.

Asked how he managed to escape notice while putting them up on a busy Sunday at the museums, he said: "They do get pretty full, but not if you put the pictures in the boring bits.

Norwegian Police Find Three Stolen Munch Pictures

First The Scream, now some lesser works ... Keep your Munch paintings under security.

***

Norwegian Police Find Three Stolen Munch Pictures

OSLO (Reuters) - Police recovered three pictures by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch in a raid on Monday a day after they were stolen from a hotel but his iconic work "The Scream" taken in a separate theft last year was still missing.

"Several people have been arrested ... some are Norwegian and others have a foreign background," Oslo assistant police chief Iver Stensrud told NRK television after a police raid in the Oslo area on Monday night.

He said police had recovered a 1915 Munch watercolor, "Blue Dress," and two lithographs -- a self-portrait and a portrait of Swedish playwright and novelist August Strindberg. It was unclear if they had been damaged, Stensrud said.

He said that it was impossible to say if the thieves were linked to those who stole "The Scream," showing a terrified waif-like figure under a blood-red sky, and "Madonna" from Oslo's Munch Museum in front of dozens of tourists last August.

But he reiterated police were confident of solving that theft too.

Hotel owner Widar Salbuvik said Sunday's robbers seemed amateurish. The stolen pictures were not even among the most valuable in the collection of 400 works ranging from Munch to Andy Warhol, he said.

Armed with a crowbar, two men broke into the country hotel south of Oslo and tore the three works off the walls and ran off after a worker in the Refsnes Gods hotel surprised them.

"Blue Dress," depicting a blonde woman, had been hanging in the hotel restaurant, which had just shut.

Art experts said the works snatched on Sunday were minor compared to the 1893 "The Scream" and "Madonna."

NO NATIONAL CATASTROPHE

"This is not a national catastrophe," Knut Forsberg, managing director of Blomqvist art auctioneers in Oslo, said of Sunday's theft.

He estimated that "Blue Dress" was worth perhaps one million crowns ($160,800), the Munch self-portrait about 300,000 crowns and the portrait of Strindberg up to about 200,000 crowns. Munch made dozens of copies of lithographs but did not number them.

By contrast, other experts have estimated "The Scream" might fetch $75 million if it could be sold at auction and "Madonna," showing a raven-haired woman, might be worth $15 million.

"The Scream" has become a symbol of angst in a world scarred by horrors including the Holocaust, the atom bomb and terrorism.

Munch painted four versions of his most famous work -- another was stolen for several months in 1994 but recovered in a sting operation by police posing as U.S. buyers.

Theories about the disappearance of "The Scream" include that the theft was ordered by a shadowy foreign collector or that the robbers planned to demand a ransom for its return.

Others said a Norwegian crime gang might simply have wanted to show off its power with the daylight robbery in August, but with no clear plans of what to do with the paintings afterwards.

Stensrud said earlier that no ransom demand had been received for "The Scream" but declined to say if police had a main theory about the motive.

Munch lived from 1863 to 1944 and produced about 1,700 paintings during his lifetime and thousands of graphic works. I did the first 101 for an upcoming gallery show and I had so much fun doing them that I'm now working on the next set of 101 covers. I'm pulling these albums from my collection of vinyl that I have gathered over my lifetime ... and friends are dropping by with gems that they find in flea markets and yard sales, which is why there are mulitples of some of the covers.

Album covers became "art" in the 1960's. With the cultural revolution that occured in that decade, music became a defining force and the 12" square album covers became icons of the era. Covers were examined, read repeatedly and held near and dear to us old hippie freaks. I have a collection of almost 3,000 albums that I still can't part with, even though I also have hundreds of compact discs, tape cassettes and mp3 files.

Dr. Demento Radio Shows

TheDoctorDementoShow.com

"Current Main Project:

Post all 1,338 Dr. Demento Shows in my collection as high-quality stereo (192kBit/s or 128kBit/s), 64kBit/s stereo and 32kBit/s mono (the lower bitrates are for our friends with modems)."

Harmonograph patterns and figures

Harmonograph
"Harmonograph
The two pendulum harmonograph draws attractive patterns that arise from drawing the relative path traversed by two swinging masses as their motion is slowly damped. And almost one in five said that Americans should be prohibited from expressing unpopular opinions.

Lemme tell you little darlings something: This is my livelihood you're
